Priyadarshan's 'Marakkar' in Oscars race

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 21 (UNI) National Award-winning and 2021's Malayalam celebrated film 'Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham' has officially entered the Oscars race.

Directed by Priyadarshan, Marakkar is one of the most expensive films in Malayalam cinema and one of the 276 films eligible for consideration for the 94th Academy Awards.

Besides Marakkar, Suriya-starrer Jai Bhim has also been selected for the prestigious award. These are the only two Indian movies that have made it to the eligibility list this year.

The Malayalam film narrates the epic tale of legendary Kunjali Marakkar IV and his epic warfare against the Portuguese. The movie has won three awards -- Best Feature Film, Best Special Effects and Best Costume Design at the 67th National Film Awards.

Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Santosh T Kuruvila, and Roy C J under Aashirvad Cinemas, Moonshot Entertainment and Confident Group, the film stars Mohanlal, Keerthi Suresh, Sunil Shetty, Arjun Sarja, Prabhu, Mukesh, Siddique and Manju Warrier.

The film was composed by Ronnie Raphael and the background music was composed by Rahul Raj, Ankit Suri and Lyle Evans Roder. Sabu Cyril and Siddharth Priyadarshan oversaw the production design and visual effects supervision.

The movie was supported by Indywood Entertainment Consortium, a premier Oscar consultancy service provider which helps filmmakers to 'GO GLOBAL.' To date, they have taken more than 50 regional films from India to international arenas including Oscars.

The Oscar nomination voting begins on January 27 and nominations will be announced on February 8. The award ceremony is scheduled for March 27 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.
