Elephant damages auto-rickshaw in Tripura

Agartala, Jun 4 (UNI) A herd of wild elephants attacked an auto-rickshaw and injured the driver on the national highway in the foothill of Atharamura hill range under Khowai district of West Tripura last night.
The driver became traumatized after the incident and ran away.
Police said the pachyderms attacked the auto-rickshaw near Krishnapur area of Teliamura subdivision. The driver Abhijit Dhar and two of his passengers left Netajinagar of Teliamura for Maharanipur in the late evening. When the auto-rickshaw reached a colony, three elephants blocked its way.
Sensing trouble, the passengers disembarked and ran away from the spot but the elephants attacked the driver who could not move out of the auto. Later, somehow he too managed to escape.
Hearing the hue and cry, villagers came out and took the auto driver to Teliamura hospital. He is now stable. however, the jumbos damaged the auto-rickshaw. There is a stretch in Atharamura foothill identified as an elephant corridor and often the animals come to the habitation areas for food.
The state government had earlier sent a proposal to develop a jumbo corridor in the stretch but it had to be stopped due to non-availability of funds from the centre. As a result, every year the poor farmers in the area lose their produce and their houses are also ransacked by the elephants.
