ED to seek extradition of Lalit Modi in money laundering case

ED to seek extradition of Lalit Modi in money laundering case
New Delhi, May 26(UNI) The Government is examining the extradition request made by Enforcement Directorate for custody of UK based former IPL chief Lalit Modi in a money laundering case. Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Vikas Swarup said the Government has received the extradition request from the ED which was being examined by the MEA and would be forwarded to UK shortly after. The Indian Premier League(IPL) boss had fled to UK in 2010 following raids on his premises in money laundering and tax evasion case and has ignored calls for his return to India. However, Modi maintains he is no fugitive in UK as he had come in connection with his ailing wife and it was the threat from the underworld that was keeping him back. The mercurial cricket czar, credited with turning IPL into a cash-rich body virtually overnight, also displayed his social media sparring skills to an extraordinary level where he not only attacked the top leadership of Congress through rapid fire tweets while sitting in London but also embroiled the senior BJP leaders such as Sushma Swaraj and Vasudhara Raje into raging controversies of having extended favours to him. A barrage of allegations and counter-allegations brought Congress and BJP to each other's throat who slugged it out inside and outside the Parliament, resulting in a near total session washout last year. A wary MEA now seems not to take chances after New Delhi faced embarrassment earlier this month when UK turned down the request for deportation of liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya who allegedly "fled" to to UK after defaulting loans from banks to the tune Rs 9,000 crore. The UK advised a recourse to extradition treaty instead. UNI PRA AE SB 1836
