ED seizes currency worth Rs 1.83 cr from forex operator in Jaipur

New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday seized foreign currency worth 93 lakh and Indian currency worth Rs 90 lakh from a forex operator in Jaipur.
Harish Bhatija, owner of Harish Forex (P) Ltd which was authorised by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for legal purchase and sale of foreign currency but in garb of RBI authorisation, he was running a racket of illegal collection of foreign currency, ED said in an official statement here.

ED action was initiated under provisions of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999(FEMA) after a specific input gathered during discreet enquiry that illegally collected and acquired foreign currencies were sent to other cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai by Harish Bhatija with the help of his one employee Kamal Bhandari.

“Kamal used to carry such illegally collected foreign currencies in person and transport them to various places by using public transport such as bus or train as mode of travel. It was also specifically gathered after discreet enquiry that Kamal used to conceal currency in a waist pouch and socks”, the probe officials said.

According to the probe agency, Kamal was intercepted in Jaipur and foreign currencies of 11 different countries including US Dollars and Euro equivalent to Rs. 60 lakh was recovered from him which was concealed in waist pouch and socks.

The probing agency also recovered foreign currency worth Rs 33 lakh and Rs 90 lakh Indian currency during the searches conducted at Harish Forex (P) Ltd, the ED said.

Incriminating documents and electronic devices reflecting illegal dealings in foreign exchange were also recovered and seized during the course of searches, ED further said.
