Duda narrowly beats Trzaskowski in Poland's presidential election

Warsar, Jul 13(UNI) Poland's incumbent President Andrzej Duda has narrowly beaten challenger Rafal Trzaskowski in Sunday's presidential vote, local media reported on Monday.
Accodring to the National Electoral Commission Mr Duda won 51.2% of the votes, while his challenger Trzaskowski got 48.8% of the votes, making it Poland's closest presidential election since communism ended in the country in 1989, the BBC reported.
One of the major issues in this election was the future of the country's strained relations with the European Union(EU).
Mr Duda is a social conservative allied with the government led by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, while Mr Trzaskowski is the socially liberal mayor of Warsaw.
Mr Duda's win it is believed will lead to further controversial reforms of the judiciary and continued opposition to abortion and gay rights. During the campaign Mr Duda came under heavy criticism after he said LGBT rights were an "ideology" more destructive than communism. Poland has one of the worst laws with regards to LGBT rights.
