DTF candidate Rajiv Ray elected as DUTA president

New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Rajiv Ray, the Left-supported candidate of the Democratic Teacher's Front, was today elected as the President of the Delhi University Teachers Association(DUTA), here. It was the third time in a row that a left candidate got elected as the DUTA president. According to the poll results that were declared late last night, the Psychology professor from Kirori Mal Colllgee, Mr Ray defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party supported National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF) candidate VS Negi by a margin of 261 votes. A total of 2,636 votes were polled for Mr Ray, while Mr Negi got 2,575 votes. Earlier , it was Nandita Narayan, the left candidate, who was the DUTA president two times in a row. Surinder Singh Rana, the Academics for Action and Development (AAD)-supported candidate stood third with 1,930 votes. According to the University's Electoral Officer Ujjwal Kumar, the number of votes polled in this election were 7,386 against the total of 9,682, while 377 votes were void. Meanwhile, Mr Ray told UNI that it was the victory of the progressive democracy, while it was a defeat for the violence mongers and the ones who inflicted an atmosphere of terror in the University and believed in suppressing the freedom of expression. He alleged that such violent forces were backed by those in power, while his fight was against the privatisation of education and the shortage in grants by the Centre for which the 'jail bharo andoloan' would continue on September 5 the Teachers Day. Among the 15 Executive Members of DUTA ,the NDTF and AAD have got four seats each, DTF has secured three seats, while INTEC has two seat and UTF and Samajwadi Shikshak Front has one seat each. There were a total of 19 candidates who battled this election, while the members who got elected included, Sunil Sharma, Mithuraj Dhusia, Alok Ranjan Pandey, Anil Sharma, Sudhanshu Kumar, Vishwajit Mohanty, Puja Vashisht, Nazma Rahmani, Ashok Kumar Yadav, Vishwaraj Sharma, Ruby Mishr, Ravikant, Vivek Chaudhary, Prem Chand and Surendra Kumar.
