Drought: Farmers of Mudalagi and Gokak Taluk stage agitation urging Karnataka Govt to immediately stop release of water from Hidkal Reservoir to Krishna River

Belagavi, May 20 (UNI) Hundreds of Farmers of Mudalagi and Gokak Taluk in the district staged agitation in the city demanding the Karnataka Government to immediately stop release of One Tmc ft of water from Hidkal Reservoir to Krishna River on the direction from Minister for Water Resources D K Shivakumar.
The agitators, who assembled at Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle, formed Human Chain and blocked traffic for some time before going in procession to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum. They urged the Minister to immediately cancel the order issued for release of the water since they are facing acute shortage of water and release water to the Left and Right canals of Ghataprabha river to solve the water problem.
Underlining that they will not allow release of water to Krishna River, the agitators said that it would be unfair for the farmers and public on the GRBC and GRBC Canals. The farmers warned of the agitation if the water is released into the Krishna river. They demanded that 2000 cusecs of the water (1.15 TMC) should be released for five days into to the Ghataprabha river from Hidkal dam.
