Liver cirrhosis is one of the major reason of liver-related deaths across the globe. The main causes of liver cirrhosis are hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). It is life-threatening disease of the liver that leads to buildup of scar tissue which prevents the liver to function normally.   Liver cirrhosis is progressive in nature and occurs when there is continuous damage to the liver over a long period. The scar tissue deposits in the liver obstruct the blood flow within the liver leading to cirrhosis. Dr. Gaurav Gupta, provides one of the best liver transplant in Mumbai and he is the Head of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery Department at Fortis, Mulund, Mumbai states, ‘Liver transplant is the most reliable and best hope for patients suffering from liver cirrhosis and medicines no longer resolve the condition. By performing a liver transplant, we remove the diseased liver and replace it with a healthy liver from an organ donor’. During the lockdown due to COVID 19 pandemic, Dr. Gaurav Gupta treated performed a successful liver transplant on 36 YO male patient.  The patient was suffering from liver cirrhosis and was developing multiple infections frequently. His health was deteriorating rapidly.  Hence, liver transplant was the only solution to give him a new lease of life. Unfortunately, his wife was not the right match for liver but his sister based in the USA was keen to donate her liver, if found suitable. Considering the pandemic situation and strict travel restrictions, it was a daunting task to get the required permission for his sister. With persistent efforts, his sister arrived in India and the liver transplant was performed after completing necessary medical examination and tests. She arrived at the right time to save her brother’s life by donating her liver. The liver transplant was a successful one and the patient got a new lease of life. The patient expressed his gratitude and satisfaction by stating, ‘“We visited multiple hospitals and consulted many doctors, and however, there was just one response that the surgery is too risky. When we met with Dr Gaurav Gupta, he explained the procedure in detail and highlighted the risk, but also gave us a glimmer of hope that the surgery could be successful. All staff and doctors, were helpful and accomodating. My sister and I are both perfectly fine, three months after the operation, and living a normal life,” For both the patient and his sister, 2021 proved to be a year of strengthening their bonding once again. In fact, they were lucky enough to celebrate Raksha Bandhan together this year. After the transplant, both the donor and the recipient are recovering well. The siblings celebrated Raksha Bandhan together this year. Dr. Gaurav Gupta, also provides Liver Cancer Treatment, and he wishes to throw light on a very humane aspect amongst the sterile medical world. He states, “This instance teaches us that living continents away does not weaken relationships. It also stands as a golden example of furthering the cause of Organ donation. Around 5 lakh people in India need to undergo lifesaving organ transplants each year. Many patients die due to the lack of availability of donors for transplants. Therefore, the need for understanding the significance and impact of organ donation is even more important,” He urges the society to come forward and sign up for organ donation with a commitment to save precious human lives as much as possible.  A single human body can help or save nearly 50 people. The medical fraternity has acquired the required skills and expertise to transplant liver, pancreas, heart, kidneys, intestines, lungs, skin, bone and bone marrow, and cornea. Also, liver is one of the organ that can be donate by a living individual. He reiterates that organ donation is a miracle that can help save lives of many human beings who suffering a great deal. Being human beings, we can always reach out and save by donating an organ if possible. Also, liver is the only organ which can regrow itself so the donor’s liver can always grow again and ensure that the donor’s health is not greatly compromised.
