Doja Cat channels 1980s spectacle with Kenny G in vivid VMA curtain-raiser

New York, Sept 8 (UNI) Doja Cat ignited the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night with a dazzling performance of her latest single "Jealous Type," blending futuristic flair with a distinctly 1980s nostalgia.
Her arrival was pure theatre, emerging from a glitchy, Max Headroom, inspired broadcast moments after LL Cool J's monologue, she launched into "Jealous Type," her neon-tinted new single.
Lensing the performance an air of timeless sophistication was none other than Kenny G, whose smooth, honeyed saxophone introduction enveloped the arena in a wave of sonic nostalgia, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Doja, attired in a pared-back yet striking white crop top and sleek black trousers, prowled the stage with magnetic command, her movements a fusion of choreographed sharpness and playful spontaneity. The performance unfolded against a neon-lit backdrop of pink and blue, heightening the throwback atmosphere.
Doja is also up for the best K-pop award for her feature on Lisa’s “Born Again.” However, she’s no stranger to the VMAs stage, as she’s taken to the stage three times. She also hosted the awards show in 2021.
The “Paint the Town Red” singer’s fifth album Vie, which features “Jealous Type,” is set to be released on Sept. 26. Doja recently wrapped up her global Scarlet Tour on July 14 in London’s Finsbury Park.
Additional VMA performers include Lady Gaga, Tate McRae, Sabrina Carpenter, Alex Warren, Busta Rhymes, Conan Gray, J Balvin, DJ Snake, Justin Quiles, Lenny Tavárez, Jelly Roll, Mariah Carey, Post Malone, Ricky Martin, Sombr, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Yungblud and Nuno Bettencourt. Performances on an extended stage include The Kid Laroi, Lola Young, Bailey Zimmerman and Megan Moroney.
