Diwali being celebrated across the country; PM celebrates it with security forces at LoC

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) The festival of lights, Diwali is being celebrated across the country with fervor and gaiety on Thursday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman extending their wishes to the people of the country and wished peace and prosperity to them on this occasion. Continuing his tradition of celebrating Diwali with security forces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reached Gurez valley, near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir to take part in the festivities along with jawans of Indian Army and BSF. The Prime Minister called upon the armed forces to be part of the nation’s endeavour to create a ‘New India’. Mr Modi has been with jawans on the border every year on the Diwali day after he took over as the Prime Minister of the country, barring 2014 when he spent the festival of light with the people of Kashmir in the aftermath of the devastating floods in the state. After offering sweets and exchanging greetings with the jawans, Mr Modi in his address to them said that like everyone else, he too wishes to spend Diwali with his family. Therefore, he said, he had come among the jawans of the Armed Forces, whom he considers to be "his family." President Ram Nath Kovind also extended his greetings to the people of the country on the occasion. Taking to Twitter, he said, "Diwali greetings to all. As we celebrate with our families, let us promote sensitivity to others and to our environment," the President tweeted on his official handle. The Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi also wished peace and prosperity to the people of the country on the occasion. In a message she said, "Let this festival of light fill your life with joy, prosperity and peace." Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also met the soldiers and their families at Andaman and Nicobar’s Brichgunj Military Station on the occasion of Diwali on Thursday. The minister, who is on a two-day visit to the country’s only tri-service command, was received at INS Utkrosh by Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Navy chief Admiral DK Joshi (retired) and Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command. Appreciating the work being done by the troops in the challenging environment, Ms Sitharaman urged them to continue their services to the nation. In addition to that, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended the best wishes to the Nepalis living in the country and abroad for peace prosperity and happiness on the occasion of Tihar, the second largest festival of Nepalis. Wishing on the occasion, President Bhandari said, “The festivals of Deepawali and Tihar which are celebrated as special festivals of light that bring light by removing darkness would bring economic prosperity to the Nepalis, promote brotherhood and stability for prosperous Nepal. US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump also extended Diwali greetings to Indians around the world and said she was looking forward to visit India next month for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). “Wishing Hindus, Sikhs & Jains around the world a joyful Saal Mubarak to all!
