Diva with sparking smile dies, leaving India in shock

New Delhi, Feb 25 (UNI) Sridevi, the Nineties' Bollywood diva with a sparkling smile, an overpowering screen presence and a versatility in her portrayals, died of cardiac arrest earlier on Sunday, leaving cinegoers, the world of Bollywood and the country in a state of shock.

Trade sources said Sridevi died of a massive cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she had gone to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding.

She was just 54 and is survived by her husband and filmmaker Bonney Kapoor and her daughters Jhanvi and Khushi.

The untimely death of Sridevi, considered among the top ranking actresses of Bollywood in the 90s and often called the 'female Amitabh' for giving tough competition to the megastar in films like 'Aakhri Raasta',

Along with husband Boney and younger daughter Khushi, Sridevi had travelled to the Emirates to attend actor Mohit Marwah's wedding.

Janhvi, Sridevi and Bonney's elder daughter, couldn't join them in Dubai as she was busy shooting for Shashank Khaitan's Dhadak.

Trade sources said Sridevi had a fainting spell in her bathroom and was immediately rushed to Rashid Hospital in Dubai.

Sources in the Consulate General of India stated that she was brought dead to the hospital.

"Her mortal remains were handed over to the forensic department," the sources added.

India's Ambassador to the UAE (United Arb Emirates), Navdeep Suri, told a TV channel that he was in touch with the local authorities to expedite the process of taking Sridevi's mortal remains back to Mumbai.

Trade sources said her body is likely to arrive in Mumbai by late evening.

The news of Sridevi's death led to shock and grief in the country.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Pranab Mukherjee and Congress president Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to Sridevi. President Ram Nath Kovind said that her demise had "left millions of fans heartbroken."

"Her performances in films such as Moondram Pirai, Lamhe and English Vinglish remain an inspiration for other actors," President Kovind tweeted.
