Disney developing live-action ‘Gaston Spinoff’ from ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Los Angeles,Dec 16 (UNI) Disney is developing a live-action spinoff film centered on ‘Gaston,’ the boastful and brawny antagonist from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ reports Variety.
The project will be penned by David Callaham, known for co-writing ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Details about the plot remain under wraps, and a director has yet to be announced.
Beauty and the Beast, based on the classic French fairy tale, tells the story of bookish Belle, who falls in love with a cursed Beast and lifts a spell that has transformed his castle into a home for talking household objects.
The animated original, released in 1991, was Disney’s highest-grossing animated film at the time. Its 2017 live-action adaptation, starring Emma Watson as Belle, was another major commercial success.
Gaston, first introduced in the animated classic, is a proud hunter who refuses to accept Belle’s rejection. Known for his immense size, thanks in part to his breakfast habits of devouring dozens of eggs, he remains one of Disney’s most memorable villains.
Luke Evans portrayed Gaston in the 2017 live-action remake, but he is not expected to return for this spinoff. Disney plans to reimagine the character with a new lead actor.
Disney’s live-action remakes of its classic properties have seen mixed results. While 2023’s Snow White underperformed at the box office, Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Lion King (2019), and Aladdin (2019) all achieved billion-dollar successes, as per Variety.
Meanwhile, Cruella, which debuted on Disney during the pandemic, was a well-received origin story exploring the villain from 101 Dalmatians.
The studio is also developing a live-action Tangled film and a spinoff about Prince Charming, directed by Wonka filmmaker Paul King, as it continues to expand its live-action universe.
