Digital Magazines of 2000 schools in Kerala available online

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 22 (UNI) Digital Magazines in around 2000 schools in Kerala have been made available on online.

The digitial magazines have been made available on online as part of the little KITES initiative by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE).

The Digital Magazines were prepared and published in schools during January 19-21 in as a mark of respect to the renowned author late Vaikkam Muhammed Basheer on his birthday.

“Today onwards, it can be viewed from the ‘Digital Magazine’ link in School Wiki portal (www.schoolwiki.in) or through the webportal www.dm18.kite.kerala.gov.in where they are arranged district wise”, KITE Vice-Chairman and Executive Director K Anvar Sadath said.

School Wiki, the largest and most comprehensive content repository among all regional languages in India with over 15000 schools in the State, features the entire set of literary works of students from State Kalolsavam from 2017 onwards.

The digital magazines are categorized in the same model. In addition to the magazines appearing in the home page of School Wiki, they would also appear in the respective school’s page, with the thumbnail image of its cover page.

Language Computing is a major component in the Little KITES training activities and as part of this Malayalam typing and Word processing are taught to students.

Similarly Raster-Vector image editing is also taught as part of graphic designing. It is the Language Computing activity which materialises in the form of digital magazine preparation in schools.

Each school’s magazine content is indeed the collection of articles made by students and teachers, which are typed given by the Little KITES members themselves, besides giving them a nice layout.

The digital magazines provide an opportunity to everyone around the globe to see the digital contents of the schools, which otherwise would have been restricted to less numbers of printed materials and handwritten articles, which may be accessible to fewer number of readers.

The digital magazines which carry different names, features stories, poems, articles etc presented with the help of pictures and graphics.

The magazines are prepared using Libre Office word processor which is a complete FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) based application.

Similar FOSS applications such as Gimp and Inkscape are used for creating pictures for the magazines.

The editorial board for the digital magazine of each school include the Head Master, Staff Editor and Student Editor.

In addition to the Little KITES members, the arts, cultural and educational clubs like ‘Vidyarangam’ in schools have also contributed to the e-magazine activities.

It is the first time ever in India that digital magazines are made available in a public domain in such a large scale.
