New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) Describing Delhi Police as one of the finest forces, not only in India but in the world, Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that it is not correct to only criticise the police force, but one must understand the contribution of police in ensuring peace and security of the country, without any bias.
Speaking at the 73rd Raising Day Parade of Delhi Police, he said 'Every citizen of the nation should nurture a deep sense of respect for police personnel, who serve and protect us continuously, at all times,' Mr Shah said.
He added that the legacy of Sardar Patel, the founder of Delhi Police, has been held steadfast by Delhi Police on several occasions.
He noted that in the last 73 years, Delhi Police's skill, steadfastness and superior policing has ensured the successful organisation of several events of national and international importance in the capital city, which is a testament to it's efficacy and efficiency.
Mentioning the vast responsibility of Delhi Police, which includes Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Prime Minister's residence and the borders of three adjacent states, the Home Minister said with the cutting-edge role of Delhi Police in combating cybercrime with expertise and experience, it is now a nodal agency for all the states on the subject.
He further added that under the Delhi Safe City Project, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 857 crore for the safety and security of the capital city, with the setting up of 10000 CCTV cameras in the areas, covered by 165 police stations.
Mr Shah noted that the Union Home Ministry has sanctioned 9300 CCTV cameras to ensure safety of women in the capital city. He said the sanction of a large number of vehicles, motorcycles and CCTV cameras would enhance the capabilities of Delhi Police.
Speaking on police welfare with a special focus on police residences, he said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 137 crore for police housing in Narela, while Rs 88 crore have been sanctioned by the Ministry over and above this amount, adding that Delhi Police itself is constructing more than 700 residences for it's personnel and expressed confidence that the issue of police residence would be successfully solved in the near future.
Urging all citizens to visit the National Police Memorial and pay their respects to the police personnel martyred over the years, the Home Minister remembered the 30 Delhi Police personnel, who have laid down their lives in the line of duty, since 1991.
He also paid homage to the five members of Delhi Police, who were martyred during the Parliament attack and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who lost his life in fighting against terrorists.
At this occasion, the Home Minister also presented medals to Delhi Police Officers for their meritorious service. Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi were present on the occasion.
