Delhi govt issues advisory on Bird Flu, requests people to take precautions

New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) In view of growing suspicion of Bird Flu in the city, the Delhi government has issued an advisory suggesting people not to consume raw chicken, unboiled eggs and raw meat along with cooked meat. Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai informing about the spread of influenza in the city told mediapersons today there was information of deaths of four more birds in a pond in Shaktisthal near Rajghat in the capital. As many as 50 birds have perished due to bird flu in the national capital so far. Mr Rai told that 27 birds died in the Deer park on Saturday and ten birds were found dead yesterday. The deaths are under control after preventive measures were undertaken. As a precautionary measure, anti-virus chemical is being sprayed to kill the virus and more steps to combat the spread of the disease will be taken in a high level coordination meeting. The minister also told that the reports of the samples of the birds to check them for prevalence of virus sent to Jalandhar and Bhopal laboratories have not been received as yet. He will meet Agriculture minister Radhamohan Singh in order to expedite the reports. In the advisory, the government has appealed to the denizens to refrain from eating raw chicken, unboiled eggs, half cooked chicken or birds, half boiled or partially fried eggs and raw meat along with cooked meat.The authorities have also requested the citizens to avoid coming in contact with unhealthy looking birds. The government has also asked people to stay away from birds' wastes also. The cage and utensils used for poultry and birds should be properly cleaned with soaps and detergents.The left-over meat should be properly disposed of. A dead bird should not be touched with bare hands but helpline number 23890318 should be availed of. Hands should be properly and regularly washed while maintaining upkeep of raw poultry products and personal cleanliness too should be maintained. Surroundings too ought to be kept clean. The government has also advised that while working with raw chicken and chicken products people must use mask on face and wear gloves in hands and use properly cooked chicken only. If a pond or water body exists near the locality or residence and the administration fails to do the fumigation , then people should inform the information control room for action to be taken.
