Delhi Fire: Factory owner, manager arrested; hunt on for others

Delhi Fire: Factory owner, manager arrested; hunt on for others

New Delhi, Dec 8 (UNI) Delhi Police have arrested the owner of the premises and the factory manager, hours after the unprecedented fire mishap at the congested Anaj Mandi in Old Delhi left at least 43 dead, the Delhi Police said here on Sunday.

The accused were identified as Rehan, owner of the building and it's factory manager Furkan, said DCP, North Delhi Monika Bhardwaj.

Talking to reporters on the site, the DCP said police were searching for other people, to whom the premises were rented out and were running other factories.

So far, 43 people have died in the incident, police confirmed. There was remote possibility of finding any bodies, according to the Disaster Management authorities.

Regarding the number and type of factories being operated in the premises, the DCP said the FSL team will be collecting the samples and it will be ascertained, once they are analysed.

The Police action came shortly after the case was handed over to the Crime Branch, amid unofficial admission by several authorities that a bag-making factory operated in the residential area without licence and no formal clearance from the Fire Brigade authorities.

The cause of the mishap has been initially attributed to short circuit, but the BJP leaders suggested that detailed investigation should be undertaken and adequate action ought to be taken against the guilty.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the site of accident, said no wrongdoer will be spared.

'We have lost more than 40 innocent lives to the tragic fire. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry into its cause, no culprit will be spared,' the CM tweeted.

A case has been registered under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code against the factory owner.
