Delhi Court sends fixing accused Sanjeev Chawla to 12-day police custody

New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) A Court here on Thursday granted twelve days police custody to Sanjeev Chawla, an alleged bookie and key accused in one of the cricket's biggest match fixing scandals that involved former South African captain Hansie Cronje.
Delhi Police extradited Sanjeev Chawla from London and produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and sought fourteen days police custody. Police has alleged that Chawla was involved in fixing of five matches and required to be taken to various places for confronting certain people in order to unearth the larger conspiracy.

Police further submitted that Cronje, who died in a plane crash in 2002, was also involved. Chawla is alleged to have played a central role in conspiring with Cronje to fix a South African tour to India in February March 2000.
Police further submitted in court that according to British court documents Chawla is a Delhi-born businessman who moved to the United Kingdom (UK) on a business visa in 1996 but continued to make trips to India.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhir Kumar Sirohi today after hearing the submission ordered twelve days police custody to Chawla.
