New Delhi, Jul 21 (UNI) Delhi on Sunday gave an emotional farewell to former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Dikshit's last rites were performed amidst heavy rain here this afternoon at the Nigam Bodh Ghat along the Yamuna with full state honours.
Party sources said she was an environment friendly person and according to her wish, the last rites were performed at the eco-friendly CNG crematorium at the Nigam Bodh Ghat.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath were among many political leaders who were present to pay tributes to the former chief minister.
Present were also Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
In the morning, mortal remains of Dikshit were taken to the AICC headquarters from where the funeral procession moved towards the Delhi Pradesh Congress Congress Committee office at Rajiv Bhawan and then to Nigam Bodh Ghat where a large number of people from all walks of life and Congress workers had gathered.
At the Congress headquarters, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot paid their tributes.
Earlier in the day, veteran BJP leader LK Advani, former Delhi Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also paid tribute to the departed Congress leader at her Nizammudin residence.
The Aam Aadmi Party government has declared a two-day mourning in her memory.
Dikshit served as chief minister from 1998 to 2013 for three consecutive terms. During her rule, Delhi got a facelift and saw the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas in public transport.
