Defence Forces to get 7 40 lakh assault rifles at cost of over Rs 12,000 crore

New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) The Defence Ministry on Tuesday cleared the purchase of seven lakh forty thousand new assault rifles at the cost of over Rs 12 thousand crore for the defence forces here.
This decision was taken in a meeting of Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Ministry has given approval for this purchase with an aim to modernize the defence forces, .
7.40 lakhs assault rifles for the three forces will cost around Rs 12,280 crore.
The DAC has also sanctioned Rs 982 crore for the purchase of 5,719 sniper rifles, Rs 1819 crore for light machine guns and Rs 850 crore for the modern torpedo system for the Navy.
Earlier in January, the DAC had approved the purchase of assault rifles, carbine and Light Machine Guns for the soldiers deployed on the forward posts.
