Declare Vidyasagar's birthday as Teacher's Day: Bengal civil society

Kolkata, Sep 24 (UNI) Thirty nine eminent persons including leading poets, academicians, actors, musicians and film directors have backed a demand that 19th century educationist and social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's birthday be celebrated as teachers' day in West Bengal.
Bangla Pokkho, an organisation claiming to promote the cause of Bengalis in the country, has written to state chief minister Mamata Banerjee demanding September 26 - the birthday of the key figure of the Bengal Renaissance - be declared Bengal's Teachers' Day.
The organisation has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare September 26 as National Teachers' Day and urged elected MPs from Bengal to fight for the cause.
