Guwahati, Jul 15 (UNI) The flood situation has further worsened in Assam, with death toll
reaching 15 and affecting over 42 lakh population.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation in a telephonic conversation
with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and assured of all cooperation from the Centre.
The number of affected districts has touched 30 today, increasing from 29 affected
districts yesterday.
Similarly, the number of affected population has increased from 26 lakh yesterday to
cross 42 lakh overnight.
Four deaths in floods were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 15.
More than 83,000 people are taking shelter in 183 relief camps in the state.
Additionally 311 relief distribution centres have been opened in different parts.
More than 90 per cent of Kaziranga National Park has also been inundated, and
11 animals killed so far, including six after being hit by vehicles.
Vast tracts of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary were also reeling under waters.
Water level of Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur), Guwahati
(Kamrup), Goalpara, Dhubri; Burhidehing at Khowang (Dibrugarh); Subansiri at
Badatighat (Lakhimpur); Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat); Jia Bharali at N.T.Rd.
Xing (Sonitpur); Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul (Nagaon), Puthimari at N.H.Rd.Xing
(Kamrup); Beki at Rd. Bridge (Barpeta); Barak at A.P. Ghat (Cachar) and Badarpur
(Karimganj); Katakhal at Matizuri (Hailakandi); Kushiyara and Sonkosh at Golakganj
(Dhubri) was flowing over the danger level.
NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response
Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search
and rescue operation.
Meanwhile, speaking to Mr Sonowal, Prime Minister Modi assured all support from
the centre to bail the state out of the scourge of the situation.
Mr Sonowal apprised the Prime Minister of the large-scale devastation that the flood
has had on the people and economy of the state and informed him about the details
of relief, rescue and rehabilitation operations undertaken by the State government.
Mr Modi assured all help, support and cooperation from the Centre to help Assam
government to bail out the situation and asked Chief Minister to undertake relief,
rescue and rehabilitation measures on a war footing.
