New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) In what could be seen as a sign of huge popularity of Indian films in China, Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’, continuing its strong run in the South East Asian market, has earned over Rs 450 cr there since its release, trade sources said today. The film has earned more than 487 million yuan (Rs 450.39 crores) since its release in China on May 5. The film has now become the highest-grossing Indian movie in China.. Disney and Marvel’s “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2” were in second place, taking in 213 million yuan while 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword' is on third place with, earnings of 36 million yuan. In fourth place was Hong Kong crime movie 'Shock Wave', generating 28 million yuan. ‘Dangal’, which features Aamir Khan along with newcomers Fatima Sana Sheikh , Sanya Malhotra and Sakshi Tanwar, reached the top spot of box office earners in China with box office earnings of 330 million yuan (48 million US Dollars ) in the week ending May 14. Directed by Nitesh Tewari, ‘Dangal’ is the biopic of Olympian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who trains his daughters to become world champions in wrestling. The film released in China as “Shuai Jiao Baba”, which means “Let’s Wrestle, Dad”. Aamir and Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari were in China last month to promote Dangal, which officially opened this year’s edition of the Beijing International Film Festival. “They received a tremendously positive response from the audience, press and trade there,” Amrita Pandey, Vice President, Studios, Disney India — the movie’s co-producer said. Trade sources say that Aamir is among the most popular Indian actors in China. Earlier too, Aamir’s 3 Idiots and PK did well in China.
