Damneet Singh opens Indian account with silver; Abhay in line for medal

Chandigarh, Jul 15 (UNI) Giving a consistent display Indian hammer thrower Damneet Singh gave India a place in the medal tally by winning silver medal in the IAAF World Under-18 Championships in Nairobi. He achieved the second place as he released the chained iron ball to a distance of 74.20 metres in his first attempt. It is also registered his personal best performance. His sequence was 74.20, 73.95, 68.78, 72.84, X, 72.83. Ukrain's Mykhaylo Kokhan effortlessly won hammer final,, earning the global age group title with a commanding performance. Kokhan sent the hammer to measure 82.31m in the second attempt His winning margin of 8.11m is the largest ever at the World U18 Championships. Germany's Raphael Winkelvoss claimed bronze with an effort of 71.78m effort. Results: Boys Hammer (5 kg):1 Mykhaylo Kokhan (Ukraine) 82.31m; 2 Damneet Singh (India) 74.20; 3 Raphael Winkelvoss (Germany) 71.78m. Indian runners Rajsahree Parsad and Him Das qualified for the 200 metres girls semi-finals. Participating in Heat 3 Rajshree clocked 23.87 and qualified for the next round. Him Das timed 24.52 in Heat 4 and earned a semi-final spot. Ch Palendra Kumar of India qualified for boys 200 metres semi-final as he clocked 21.90 in Heat 1. Akshay Nain timed 22.22 in Heat 4 which was not enough to carry him to the next round. Abhay Gupta made it to the boys discus final as in the qualifying round he threw the disc to a distsnce of 57.45 metres in group A. His effort was the third best display in Group A and B. Claudio Romerio of Chila topped Group A with 59.08 metres while the best was of Oleksiy Kyrylin of Ukraine who measured 60.30 metres. Abhay is in a line for medal.
