Dalit youth death sparks outrage, Khaira seeks murder case against cops, and HC intervention

Chandigarh, June 8 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Sunday demanded criminal proceedings against police personnel allegedly involved in the death of 22-year-old Lovepreet Singh, also known as Labha, during a police operation in Jalandhar district, and urged the Punjab and Haryana High Court to intervene in the matter.
Reacting to the incident, Khaira described the death of the young Dalit man from Bangiwal village in Mehatpur as a matter of grave concern and called for an independent judicial inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the case.
The Congress legislator questioned the police version of events and said conflicting accounts emerging from the incident warranted scrutiny by an authority independent of the police department. While law enforcement authorities have reportedly maintained that the firing took place in self-defence, the victim's family and residents have alleged that Lovepreet was assaulted before being shot and was not provided timely medical assistance.
