Dalit leader Immanuel death anniversary passes off peacefully

Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu Sep 11 (UNI) The 59th death anniversary of veteran Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran was passed off peacefully with State Ministers, leaders of various Dalit outfits, political parties and hundreds of people paid homage at his memorial in Paramakudi, here amid unprecedented security arrangements, today.
Tamil Nadu Minister of Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare V.M.Rajalakshmi and Minister for Information Technology Dr.M.Manikandan laid wreaths at the memorial on behalf of the state government.
The Dalit leader’s daughter Sundari Prabharani (64), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Thol.Thirumavalavan, Bahujan Samaj Party State President K.Armstrong, DMK leaders N.Sathuya Moorthy and A.Tamilarasi, leaders of TNCC, TMC, MDMK, Puthiya Tamilagam and DMDK among others paid their homage.
Immanuel Sekaran, an icon of Dalit community fought against the social injustice meted out to the Dalits. He actively involved in the depressed classes’ movement in Southern districts of Tamil Nadu and propagated the importance of education among Dalits and created awareness among them to fight against oppression. He was murdered on the same day in 1957, when he was just 33 years.
No untoward incidents were reported in any parts of the district. The death anniversary was peaceful, Superintendent of Police N.Manivannan told newsmen here this evening.
Police made unprecedented security arrangements in the district to prevent any caste-violence. The district administration had already promulgated prohibitory order, invoking Section 144 of CrPC. Over 5,000 police personnel, bringing the entire Paramakudi town under CCTV surveillance, besides an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle fitted with camera was utilized to monitor the entire events under the direct supervision of Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) J.K.Tripathy.
