Chennai, Oct 4 (UNI) A Red Alert has been sounded in Tamil Nadu and
Kerala for October seven as heavy rains in excess of 25 cm would
occur in view of the low pressure area over the Southeast Arabian
sea which was likely to concentrate into a depression and intensify
into a cyclonic storm.
The met office on Thursday issued the red alert following which the
Tamil Nadu government advised all the district administration to take
preventive measures and open relief centres to house people evacuated
from low lying areas, Commissioner for Revenue Administration Dr K
Satyagopal said.
Rainfall in excess of 25 cm of rain would occur in a short span of
time following which the red alert was issued to Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
People in all the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu were advised to
move to safer places following forecast of heavy rains on Sunday,
that might lead to conditions favourable for the onset of Northeast
monsoon in the State.
Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed several districts of Tamil Nadu, including
Chennai and its suburbs, since last night, as the cyclonic circulation
over southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area extending
up to 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.
The cyclonic circulation extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level over
southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka off Tamil Nadu coast
persists.
Met office said a low pressure area was very likely to form over southeast
Arabian Sea tomorrow. It was likely to concentrate into a depression and
move northwestwards during subsequent 48 hours.
'It is likely to intensity in to a cyclonic storm thereafter', it said.
