Cyclone toll rose to 45, relief works on, CM to visit affected areas on Tuesday

Chennai, Nov 18 (UNI) The toll in the devastation caused by
severe Cyclonic Storm 'Gaja', which has turned the lives of
thousands of people topsy turvy, mounted to 45 on Sunday,
even as more Ministers were rushed to monitor the relief
works in affected districts that were continuing on a war
footing.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who would
be touring the affected areas on Tuesday to make an on the
spot assessment of the damages caused by the calamity, said
45 people have died in cyclone and rain-related incidents
so far.
He said he was pained to hear that 45 people have lost
their lives in Cyclone and rain and announced a solatium
of Rs ten lakh each to the families of deceased, besides
Rs one lakh to those who suffered serious injuries and
Rs 25,000 to those who sustained simple injuries.
He said a large number of cattles and goats have also
perished in the Cyclone fury, that caused extensive
damages in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam,
Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Trichy,
Sivaganga, Karur and Cuddalore districts, when it
crossed the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Coasts
between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam early
on Friday.
Stating that relief works were on in the affected areas
on a war footing and in full swing, Mr Palaniswami said
a total of 102 cattles and 633 goats have died in the
Cyclone and announced a compensation of Rs 30,000 and
Rs 3,000 each respectively.
A total of 2,49,083 people were evacuated from low lying
areas and housed in 493 relief camps where they were given
food, drinking water, mat, bedsheets and other essentials,
besides 10 kg of rice, a dhoti and saree and a litre of
kerosene to each family affected by the cyclone.
