Chennai, Nov 19 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami
on Monday announced immediate release of Rs 1,000 crore towards
undertaking relief works in the Cyclone 'Gaja' affected districts
of the State, even as the toll mounted to 46.
In a detailed statement, estimating the loss suffered by the
calamity, he said so far 46 people were killed in Cyclone and
rain-related incidents and announced an assistance of Rs ten
lakh each to their families.
Stating that the relief and restoration works were on a war
footing, he said 'considering that financial assistance is
important to take up relief works, an immediate fund of
Rs 1,000 crore has been released for this purpose'.
He said the cyclone has caused major damages as lakhs of
trees were uprooted, thousands of electric poles were
felled, besides causing extensive damages to roads, coconut
trees, agricultural crops, drinking water supply schemes,
houses and public buildings.
Assuring that the state government would urge the centre to
release immediate funds from the National Disaster Relief
fund to take up relief and rehabilitation works, he sought
the cooperation from all sections of the society in restoring
the normal life in the affected districts.
Mr Palaniswami said a total of 2,51,674 people were housed
in 514 relief camps in the districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur,
Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Dindigul districts and announced
provision of additional one dhoti, saree and four litres of
Kerosene to the people in the affected districts, besides
Rs 3,800 cash for each family for purchase of clothes and
utensils and milk for senior citizens and women through
the State-owned Aavin.
