Curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar on Afzal Guru's

Srinagar, Feb 9 (UNI) Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in major areas of downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) today to foil any protest demonstration on the third death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. The strike also hit life in restriction-free areas in the city. The separatist organizations, including both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) have called for a general strike as on this day in 2013, Guru was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar jail and later buried there. Official sources said that the decision to impose restrictions in Srinagar was taken at a meeting chaired by Director General of Police K Rajindra Kumar at Police Control Room (PCR) here yesterday. Mr Rajendra has said that safety and security of the people is the prime concern and any effort of elements inimical to peace should be foiled firmly. Sources said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of police station Safa Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, M R Gunj, Kralkhud and parts of Rainawari to maintain law and order. However, situation on the ground was totally different as security forces and state police, deployed in strength, have closed main and major of link roads with barbed wires. Hundreds of state police and paramilitary forces, wearing bullet proof jackets and holding automatic weapons and lathis in their hands remained deployed on both sides of the Nallahmar from Khanyar to Chattabal. However, the road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) through Eidgah was through though only for those going to the Institute. Residents of the areas where restrictions have been imposed alleged that they were directed to remain indoor. ''We are not being allowed to move out of our houses,'' they alleged. A group of mediapersons saw motorcyclists and those driving vehicles were directed to return to their homes at several places in the downtown and SeK. The Ikhwan chowk, connecting civil lines with SeK was also closed for any traffic movement. In the civil lines, including Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, Budshah Chowk, Regal Chowk, Residency road, Moulana Azad Road, Hari Singh High Street, Amira Kadal and Exhibition crossing large number of security force and state police personnel remained deployed since early this morning to prevent any demonstration. However, there were no restrictions in the civil lines barring at Maisuma, where the main road had been closed with barbed wire to foil any attempt by locals to took out a procession on Guru’s death anniversary.
