CSE demands ban on potassium iodate as food additive

New Delhi, Jun 21 (UNI) A day after the government banned the use of potassium bromate as a food additive which is normally used in breads, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) today demanded that the use of Potassium iodate, another cancer causing element, should be removed from list of permissible additives. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) yesterday removed two additives, namely Potassium Bromate(normally used in bread and bakery products) and Cyclamates (normally used in jams, jellies, marmalades, dairy based drinks, confectionery from list of permissible additives. Potassium Bromate and Cyclamates are not allowed in any food category in the country. FSSAI has convened a meeting of the Scientific Committee on June 28 to discuss other issues which have been received with respect to additives after these were finalised. The Committee will also discuss the issue of use of Potassium Iodate in food in the country. Talking to UNI, CSE Food Safety head Amit Khurana said, ''We welcome the move of the Government. FSI has taken promptly action after CSE study.'' He said chemical potassium bromate has been banned in EU but it was being used in India. After banning of potassium bromate, public health risk will be reduced. UNI NY SW RSA 1649
