CPI(M) demands release of all political prisoners, cites Varavara Rao's health condition

New Delhi, Jul 13 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health condition of several jailed political and human rights activists and demanded release of all such prisoners, particularly revolutionary poet Varavara Rao whose health condition is reported to be alarming.

The party Polit Bureau noted in a statement here that the country's jails were already full and basic facilities were not available there. In such a situation, concerns have increased about the health of these prisoners.

The statement said that prisoners such as Akhil Gogoi have been found to be Coronavirus positive and the condition of revolutionary poet Varavara Rao has become extremely critical.

"Given the cramped and unhygienic conditions in the jails, there is every possibility that prominent human rights activists like Gautam Navlakha, Anil Teltumbde, Sudha Bharadwaj, Shoma Sen, jailed on trumped up charges are at risk of catching the infection.

"Among the other political prisoners, the condition of Prof Saibaba is even worse. A person with 90 per cent disability, he has 19 medical conditions, many of which are life threatening. Even UN Special rapporteurs on human rights had last year demanded his release given his health condition," the statement added.

In view of reports of the deterioration of Varavara Rao's condition on social media, the country's well-known litterateurs and human rights have demanded adequate health facilities and protection, it may be noted.
