New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) Former President Pranab Mukherjee and Puducherry Education Minister R Kamalakannan became the latest politicians to contract Novel Coronavirus on Monday, as the country registered 62,064 new cases in the past 24 hours, pushing the tally to 22,15,075.
Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had tested positive for COVID-19.
Special Sub-Inspector of Police (SSI) Pauldurai (56), who was arrested in connection with the sensational custodial deaths of a father-son duo at Sathankulam, died at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), after testing positive for COVID-19.
Tamil film producer V Swaminathan of Lakshmi Movie Makers passed away due to Coronavirus at a private hospital.
At present, there are 6,34,945 active cases pan India and the death toll too mounted to 44,386, with 1007 fresh deaths, owing to the contagion.
On the brighter side, India reported highest daily recoveries of 54,859 from the deadly virus during the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cured and discharged to 15,35,743.
With the new jump in recoveries, the recovery rate has risen to 69.33 per cent, as per Union Health Ministry update.
The list of recovered persons include Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who had been admitted to a private hospital last week, after testing positive for COVID-19.
He was discharged from the hospital, while Karnataka Cooperative Minister S T Somashekar, who had tested positive for Coronavirus, also completed his home quarantine and tested negative.
The country conducted total 4,77,023 tests during the previous day, which takes the cumulative total of tests till August 9 to 2,45,83,558.
