Covid-19 pandemic:Another day, another reckoning

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) India's COVID-19 tally reached 74,32,681 on Saturday, after a fresh spike of 62,212 cases, was recorded in the past 24 hours, Union Health Ministry said in its daily update.
Meanwhile, 70,816 coronavirus patients were cured/discharged during the time-frame, taking to 65,24,595, the total number of recoveries.
With 837 fatalities in past one day, the death toll, too, has spiked to 1,12,998, so far in the country.
Active case load has further reduced by 9,441 since Friday and the number currently stands at 7,95,097.
In terms of percentage, the active cases are 10.70 per cent. Recovery rate stands at 87.78 per cent, while the death rate is at 1.52 per cent.
According to Indian Council of Medical Research, as many as 9,99,090 samples were tested in the past 24 hours, taking the total cumulative samples tested since the beginning of the pandemic till Friday to 9,32,54,017.
Maharashtra continued to remain the worst-affected state in terms of case count as well as in terms of maximum active cases.
Global COVID-19 cases reached 39,247,785, while the death toll 1,103,352 fatalities.
Total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed eight million-mark on Friday,said according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
Brazil has reported 153,214 deaths in the pandemic.
