COVID-19: Palghar paces up testing, Thane's death count drops marginally

Palghar/Thane, Jul 9 (UNI) Palghar Collector Kailash Shinde on Thursday gave a brief account of how the administration is ramping up medical facilities in order to reduce the COVID-19 mortality rate, which stands at 1.3 per cent as of now.

In a recorded message, he asserted that concerted efforts are being made to increase testing capacity so as to bring down the mortality rate in the district below 1 per cent.

He said that under the CM Uddhav's Chase the Virus' campaign, Palghar has received 3,000 rapid antigen kits while other set of 10,000 kits is in pipeline.

A request has been made to set up a state-of-the-art laboratory at the Vedanta College in Dahanu town, he told, affirming that the facility will have the capacity to perform 500 tests daily with the aid of automated RT-PCR machine.

TrueNAT machine has also been sought for the rural hospital in Wada taluka while the ASHAs are already geared up with pulse oximeter, he added.

Palghar has tallied 1,542 pandemic cases with 19 fatalities till now. The district's recovery rate has improved to 62 per cent, informed an official spokesman.

Collector Shinde appealed the private medicos to refer patients with fever, cough, cold, shortness of breath--symptoms of the Severe Acute Respiratory Infection and Influenza--to fever clinics immediately.

Meanwhile, in the Thane district, the cases and fatalities have increased by 36 and 28 per cent, respectively, since July start. The number of infected individuals is inching closer to 50,000-mark.

Out of the district's total tally, the cities of Thane and Kalyan account for 25 and 22 per cent cases, respectively, an official apprised, adding that 1,404 people succumbed to the contagion in the preceding day.

Since July 1, the recovery and mortality rates have improved in the ratio of percentages 51.46:54.51 and 3.16:2.98, respectively, authorities said.
