COVID-19; Flower growers in Idukki district in dire strait

Kottayam, Aug 31 (UNI) Lack of demand for flowers in the markets due to COVID-19 pandemic has affected the growers in Cumbum-Gudallur stretch in Idukki district during the Onam season.
During Onam festival flowers were bought to make floral carpets for decoration and for other purpose including pujas. At least 1000 kg of flowers were transported from the border villages through inter-state checkpost at Kumily during Onam on a daily basis, a farmer in Gudallur said.
The quantity has declined to 50 per cent and the flower sellers have not made any profit after the lockdown. The pandemic has dampened their best season for business, according to the flower sellers.
