COVID-19 death toll crosses 100-mark, positive cases surge past 15,000 in TN

Chennai, May 23 (UNI) The death toll due to novel coronavirus touched 103 in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, with five more fatalities reported and the number of positive cases breached the 15,000-mark to reach 15,512 in the state.

Health and Family Welfare Department in its bulletin said while the current mortality rate caused by the virus was 0.66 percent, the recovery rate stood at 48.29 percent, as a total number of 7,491 patients were discharged after treatment till now, including today's 363 patients.

About 759 positive new cases were reported today, which includes 49 returnees from overseas and other states.

A 67-year-old man from Chennai with Chronic Kidney Disease on Hemodialysis, admitted on May 16 in a Private hospital, died on May 20 at 0805 hours due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Type-1 Respiratory Failure.

A 75-year-old woman from Chennai with Senile Dementia and Chronic Debilitated State, admitted on May 14 in Government Stanley Hospital, died at 1400 hours on Friday due to Senile Dementia, Chronic Debilitated State, Aspiration Pneumonitis and COVID positive.

A 68-year-old man from Chennai with Systemic Hypertension, Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, admitted on May 21 at 2313 hours in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital ­(RGGGH) died yesterday at 1215 hours due to Respiratory Failure, COVID-19 Pneumonia, Systemic Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

A 54-year-old man from Chennai with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, admitted on May 20 at 2135 hours in RGGGH, died yesterday at 1015 hours, due to Respiratory Failure, COVID-19 Positive Status, Bilateral Pneumonia and Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus.

A 53-year-old man from Chennai with Systemic Hypertension, admitted on May 17 in Government Medical College and Hospital, Omandurar Government Estate, died today at 0730 hours due to Acute Pulmonary Edema, Systemic Hypertension, COVID-19 Positive Status, COVID Pneumonia and Respiratory Failure.

Of the total 103 deaths, 72 were reported in Chennai, 8 in Thiruvallur, 6 in Chengalpattu, two each in Madurai, Theni, Thoothukudi and Villupuram and one each in Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Vellore.

The number of coronavirus positive cases reported today was 759 (429 men, 330 women), as a total of 15,512 people have tested positive so far in Tamil Nadu that included 9,876 men, 5,631 women and five transgenders.

The bulletin said 74 passengers returned from other countries reported positive till today. 38 passengers returned from other countries, initially tested negative and turned positive during the exit screening after seven days.

Fresh cases were reported in as many as 12 districts.

Of the 759 new cases, Chennai once again topped with 624 cases, taking the city's coronavirus tally to 9,989.

Next to Chennai, the Chengalpattu district reported 39 cases, followed by Thiruvallur 17, Kancheepuram 13, Thiruvannamalai 6, Villupuram 4, Tenkasi 2, Cuddalore, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ranipet and Theni 1 each, besides 49 returnees from overseas and other states.

Of the total 15,512 cases, 948 (513 male, 435 female) were in the 0-12 age group, 13,286 (8,577 men, 4,704 women and transgender 5) in 13-60 age group and 1,278 (786 men and 492 women) in 60-plus age group.

District wise, Chennai continued to remain on top of the COVID chart with 9,989 cases, followed by Chengalpattu (733), Thiruvallur (697), Cuddalore (423), Ariyalur (355), Villupuram (326), Tirunelveli (282), Kancheepuram (264), Madurai (226), Thiruvannamalai (184), Coimbatore (146), Thoothukudi (149), Perambalur (139) and Dindigul (133).

Till date, a total of 3,97,340 samples of people have been taken and sent for testing of which 15,512 persons tested positive, 3,81,216 negative, while testing of 612 samples were under process and 17,529 were repeat samples of same persons.

The total number of persons tested till date was 3,79,811 which included 11,872 persons today.

A total of 5,518 suspected individuals were under treatment in isolation wards and the number of persons under treatment in hospitals were 7,915 as on today.

The State has 68 testing facilities - 41 government and 27 private labs.
