COVID-19 : Chicken sales soars amid lockdown

Kochi, Apr 18 (UNI) The sale of chicken became active in Kerala during the lockdown and demand from households had increased.
In March, bird flu outbreak along with COVID-19 affected chicken sales which led to a steep fall in the price. This fall in price and easy availability have made chicken the most demanded item in the lock down period in the state.
According to vendors, four lakh kg chicken is sold in the state every day. Chicken produced in farms of Kerala is being sold. Vendors receive enough stock from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka amid the lock down.

Decline in the supply of fish and raid on contaminated fish had increased the demand for chicken in Kerala.

Vendors said during Easter, most of the customers purchased chicken. But compared with the sale of March and April in 2019, the sales were very low this year. But the demand from households has increased, they said.
Earlier, Kerala recorded 40 lakh kg chicken sales. Among this, majority share of sales was by hotels. Purchase from households was recorded below one lakh kg. But this practice changed a lot with the lockdown, Jinu Abraham, wholesale chicken dealer, said.
Many chicken centres across the state offer door delivery facility also. At present chicken is priced at Rs 115 to 125 per kg. The price was Rs 35 to Rs 45 per kg during the previous month.
