Court should take relook at Section 377 after today's verdict: Chidambaram

Court should take relook at Section 377 after today's verdict: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Aug 24 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said that in light of today's verdict to declare Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right, the Supreme court should relook at its judgement on section 377. Talking to reporters here, Mr Chidambaram said,'Section 377, in my view, was rightly struck down or read down by the Delhi High Court judgement by Justice AP Shah. Unfortunately that was reversed by the Supreme Court. In the light of this judgement, it should be possible to ask the Supreme Court to take a second look at that judgment. ' In its 2013 judgement, the apex court upheld Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which discriminates against a section of individuals in society on the basis of their sexual orientation, and placed the onus of repealing it on Parliament. A writ petition, challenging Section 377 on the ground that it violates the privacy of citizens, is still pending. UNI AR SNU 1653
