Guwahati, Nov 6 (UNI) The countdown for the first ever-AIBA Youth Women’s

World Boxing Championship in India has begun with the launch of the logo,

official theme song and video and mascot for the event here today.

The Championship, which will serve as a qualification event for the Youth

Olympic Games at Buenos Aires 2018, is scheduled to be held at Guwahati,

Assam, from November 19 to 26 next.

The official launch of the Championship was done by Assam Chief

Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Boxing Federation of India (BFI)

president Ajai Singh at a function here.

Olympian boxer Shiva Thapa and singer-composer Zubeen Garg, both

from Assam, were today newly anointed brand ambassadors for the event,

along with veteran Olympic medalist Mary Kom, who was already named

as one of the ambassadors.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sonowal, who was the Union MoS for

Sports prior to taking over his current position, said the world boxing meet

will give exposure to local budding sportspersons to global talents and they

can draw inspiration from the participants.

He reiterated his government’s endeavour to establish Guwahati as the

sports capital of the country and said various more international-level

competitions are lined up in the coming months.

The chief minister also stressed on developing local talents and highlighted the steps taken by the government for improving sport infrastructure.

BFI president Ajai Singh, expressing gratitude to the Assam government

for its cooperation in organizing the event, said, “This is the first time that

India is hosting a world boxing championship. This event has opened the

gates for holding more such competitions in the future, including the elite

women’s championship next year and the men’s elite championship, the

year after that.”

“Our future champions in the boxing ring will emerge from the youth

meets,” he added.

The 11 shortlisted players of the Indian team, the coach and other team

officials were also present on the occasion.

The mascot of the Championship, a female rhino named ‘Guppi’, was

presented at the launch event, along with the official theme song and video.

The official logo for the event was also unveiled on the occasion.

Over 130 boxers from 38 countries will be competing in 10 weight

categories in the Championship.
