Conversion of MCH as COVID Centre cripples medical care facilities for other patients : Ummer

Conversion of MCH as COVID Centre cripples medical care facilities for other patients : Ummer

Malappuram, Jul 6 (UNI) The sudden conversion of the Medical College Hospital (MCH) as COVID-19 exclusive centre has crippled the medical care facilities for other patients, including the critically ill, owing to want of a proper and alternative healthcare facilities for secondary and critically ill in other Government hospitals this district, Manjeri MLA M Ummer has alleged.

The need to limit a portion of the Government MCH in Manjeri for COVID-care to facilitate treatment facilities for other patients at MCH, the only referral hospital in the district, besides enabling medical education of the medicos are being highlighted even as authorities working overtime to alternative facilities in place.

That apart, the medical education of the students of the MCH has been hit for the past four months as no other patients other than Coronavirus cases are being treated at the hospital.

With examinations nearing, the authorities fear that the students may find it difficult to cope up with their studies if normalcy was not brought back in the MCH.

With Conversion of MCH as COVID exclusive centre had hit many, apart from treatment for cancer, cardiac and other critical illnesses, thousands throng the gynaecology department of the hospital which has recorded over 3000 deliveries last year, the MLA pointed out.

A decentralised set up for COIVD treatment is suggested by the MCH authorities. Given the situation where positive cases are on an increase day-by-day, the present facilities may not be sufficient to cater to a possible surge in the offing, they feared.

Meanwhile, the Haj House in Karipur is being readied as a 500-bed hospital for COVID-19 treatment. That apart, more First Line Treatment Centres as opened in Nilambur and Muttam are also planned, Health Department sources said.

The upgradation with medical facilities of the district hospitals in Tirur and Ponnani are also suggested as an alternative to the concentration being witnessed in the Manjeri MCH.

Freeing a portion of the MCH would help cater to other patients as well as help us carry on with our regular medical education as examinations are nearing, MCH sources said.

The authorities are working overtime to equip other hospitals and centres to cater to a possible surge in COVID-19 cases and thus bring normalcy to the MCH as to facilitate treatment facilities for non-COVID patients and also to ensure the smooth functioning of the Medical college.
