Contempt conviction: Apex court registry declines to admit plea of Justice Karnan

New Delhi, May 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court registry today declined to admit a writ petition filed by Calcutta High Court sitting judge, Justice C S Karnan, who was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment for contempt of court. The apex court registry said it found the writ petition of Justice Karnan as “not maintainable” and devoid of reasonable cause to be received for registration. Justice Karnan had approached the apex court seeking recall of its order of May 9, in which it had convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment for contempt of court. By now, it is fairly well settled that the judicial proceedings of the Supreme Court are not amenable, the Registrar said in its order. A copy of the Supreme Court Registrar's order said that the present writ petition was not maintainable. The order held, "I am constrained, but to hold that the present writ petition is not maintainable, the relief if any lies, somewhere else. I thus see no reasonable cause to receive the present writ petition for registration under the provisions of order XV, rule (5) of the Supreme Court rules, 2013." UNI XC RP2006
