Congress leader dies during election campaign

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (UNI) Former AICC member and District Congress Committee (DCC) vice president Kavallur Madhu, who fainted during an election campaign, died here on Sunday.

The 58-year-old Congress leader fainted while campaigning for Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate K Mohan Kumar in Vattiyoorkavu constituency this afternoon.

Though he was rushed to a private hospital at Sasthamangalam here, he breathed his last before reaching the hospital.

Following the demise of the Congress leader, the UDF cancelled the election campaign for the day as a mark of respect to the departed soul, party sources said.

Top Congress leader and former Defence Minister AK Antony, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, former chief minister and AICC general secretary Oommen Chandy and KPCC President Mullappally Ramachandran have also condoled the demise of the Congress leader.

The cremation would take place at Thycaud Santhikavadom on Monday at 1000 hrs, sources added.
