Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh), Nov 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday sought to hint that the Congress party had 'inherited' the right to rule India from the erstwhile British colonial masters and said the power to govern India was passed on to the grand old party.
"Angrez ne virasat mein di thi (The power was passed on by the colonial masters)," he said addressing an election rally here.
"Jab tak aap gantantra ko nahi samjhogey, aap chae walla ko gaali dete rahogey (Till you understand the significance of India's democracy, you will keep cursing the chae-wallah (tea seller)," Prime Minister said.
He said Congress party, which makes towering claim about its commitment to democracy, should at least for the five years make any one "out of the dynasty" as the Congress president.
"If you say, Congress has firm commitment to democratic values, if you say it was due to the principles laid down by Pt Jawaharlal Nehru that a chae-wallah could become Prime Minister, then make one man out of the dynasty the Congress President for at least five years," Prime Minister said.
"This will be good for the country as well," he said. Prime Minister said the Congress party does not want to credit the people of India for making him - a Chae-wallah- Prime Minister and wondered as to why even for this, "they want to credit Pt Nehru".
"This only shows their undemocratic mindset," Mr Modi said.
Mr Modi lashed out at the Congress for making all sorts of promises to the electorate in Chhattisgarh and said these are being made as Congress party knows it well that they will not come to power.
Addressing the election rally here, four days before the crucial second and final phase of polls on November 20 for Chhattisgarh assembly, Mr Modi reminded the gathering that Chhattisgarh under Ajit Jogi and prior to that under "Diggy raja (Digvijaya Singh)" during united Madhya Pradesh and Congress rule has suffered enough.
"About 60 per cent of election promises made by Congress during Digvijaya Singh rule and later under Ajit Jogi was not fulfilled," he said.
Prime Minister said the Congress party is still at a loss as to understand the significance of the 2014 parliamentary polls mandate and has so far not able to accept a "chae-wallah" as Prime Minister of India.
