Congress expels Barkha Singh for anti-party activities; defiant, she vows legal recourse

New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) Congress today expelled from the party for six years its senior leader Barkha Shukla Singh, a day after her resignation from its women's wing and attack on Nehru-Gandhi family scion Rahul Gandhi and Delhi PCC chief Ajay Maken. The defiant leader, however, termed the expulsion ‘illegal’ and said she would take legal recourse against it. A statement from the Delhi Congress attributed the expulsion of Ms Barkha Singh 'for undertaking anti-party activities just before the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. 'Disciplinary Committee of the DPCC, in its meeting dated April 21, has unanimously decided to expel Ms Barkha Singh for period of six years from the party for undertaking anti-party activities, just before the MCD elections. A resolution to this effect has been passed,' the statement affirmed. The four-member Disciplinary Committee, consisted of former Delhi Minister Narender Nath, Abha Chaudhary (former President Delhi Mahila Congress), Mahmood Zia and Surender Kumar. Ms Barkha Singh had yesterday stepped down as chief of the women's wing of the Delhi Congress. A combative Barkha Singh said ,'Rahul Gandhi has again proved to the people of this great nation that he considers the Congress party to be his family run feifdom. 'I want to know how does voicing opinion about Rahul Gandhi amount to anti-party activities ? I have not said anything against the Congress party. Is Rahul Gandhi trying to say that Congress is Gandhi family and the Gandhi family is the Congress?' She said that she would file a petition in the Election Commission against Mr Rahul Gandhi’s election as Congress vice-president. 'Even the party has not held elections for the last 17 years and Rahul Gandhi has been purposely delaying organisational polls. 'Rahul Gandhi was not elected to the position of Congress vice-president . I will be filing a petition in the election commission,’’she said. Barkha Singh had yesterday also attacked DPCC chief Ajay Maken. 'Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Ajay Maken has only used the issue of empowerment of women and women security to gather votes. The issue means nothing to them." Ms Singh said. "In the current organisation, where I myself am unsafe, how will I empower women in that set-up? That is why I hereby resign from the post of President of Delhi Mahila Congress,'she said. Ahead of the civic polls, former Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely had also quit the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. UNI AR RP1819
