Congress decision to boycott GST launch unfortunate: Govt

New Delhi, Jun 29 (UNI) The Government today described as 'unfortunate' the Congress move to boycott tomorrow’s midnight function in Parliament’s Central Hall for launch of the GST, and dismissed all the reasons given by the Opposition party for its decision. The Government fielded its senior Cabinet Member, Minister for Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu to reply to the Congress attack, jointly launched by its top leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, Anand Sharma and Jairam Ramesh at a press conference here. 'We fail to understand the logic behind the Congress decision. The only reason is that they are left with no issues to criticise the government,' Mr Naidu said here shortly after the main Opposition party held a press conference here to announce its decision to boycott tomorrow’s event. The Congress held that holding GST launch in central Hall of Parliament was an attempt by the BJP to trivialise Freedom at Midnight moment. 'This function under present circumstances was uncalled for, particularly as the country was grappling with farmers' suicides, incidents of mob lynching and a climate of intolerance,' the party said and claimed that the GST in the present form was going to increase the difficulties of the small businessman and traders. Rejecting the logic, Mr Naidu said that the Central hall was the centre of the country’s democratic activity, and pointed out that previous Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh himself was elected only in the Central hall. The Congress supported the GST enabling Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill in Parliament, and it was during their rule that the GST Bill was first brought in Parliament, so at this stage, it was quite understandable as to why the party was suddenly opposing it, he said. 'The whole country is stunned over the Congress suddenly deciding to boycott the GST function. They are asking why this function was being held at midnight. Is it a sin to work at midnight ?' Mr Naidu said. 'The whole country is rejoicing. GST is a transformatory revolutionary taxation that would put an end to tax evasion. This is the biggest reform in taxation since independence,' he said. 'GST is Indian economy’s tryst with destiny,' the Minister said. UNI NAZ RSA SHK 1919
