Congress alleges corruption in operations of GeM

New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) The Congress today alleged corruption in the working of the various departments and the Centre and said the government should keep a check on this. Addressing reporters here, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said huge corruption had come to light in the operation of the Government e-Marketplace, ( GeM), an online platform launched by the NDA government last year for most routine purchases, which he said was likely to cause a huge loss to the government exchequer. He said that the charges of corruption were levelled not by the Opposition but the own members of the BJP. 'One Union Minister and several BJP MPs have written a letter to Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, complaining of corruption in the operation of the GeM. These include Union Minister Fagan Singh Kulaste, and BJP MPs Ashok Nete, Kaushal Kishore, Alok Sanjay, Harish Dwivedi,, Rajesh Dwivedi and Arjun Lal Meena as also a non BJP MP. In their letter to the Ministers, the BJP MPs complained of irregularities in the operation of the GeM, causing a huge loss to the exchequer. It is estimated that these involve hundreds of crores worth of corruption,' Mr Surjewala said. The Congress leader said in their letter to the Minister , the MPs had expressed apprehension that a handful of people could use the portal for making quick money, in this process causing a loss to the exchequer. Mr Surjewala said the MPs complained that rate of many of the commodities sold on the portal are more than the contract rates, citing in this regard the example of electronics energy meters sold on the portal. 'The question is if there is not transparency in the sale of commodities through the GeM, why was the portal launched by the government . Also, despite eight Mps of the BJP and union minister writing a letter to the Commerce Minister why has the government not given any response in the matter and fixed accountability Does this who matter not reek of corruption ? If so, will Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has said that ‘Na Khaunga Na Khane Doonga (will neither take bribes not allow anyone else to do so), launch an investigation and take any action in the matter,' Mr Surjewala asked.
