New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The Congress party on Saturday said that the Supreme Court has agreed with its objection to the Modi government’s plan on setting up a ‘Social Media Communication Hub’, which the BJP will use as a ‘tool to snoop on citizens’.
The Supreme Court on Friday took on the Union Government and observed that setting up a social media hub for monitoring online date would be ‘like creating a surveillance state’.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s observation, AICC Communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the Congress raised the issue on June 1 by its spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
In a tweet, he said that the Congress had pointed out that social media hub will be a tool for BJP to snoop on citizens.
“June 1: Congress raises the serious issue of Modi Govt acting as a ‘surveillance state’ by setting up a ‘Social Media Communication Hub’ that will be a tool by BJP to snoop on citizens”, he tweeted.
Mr Surjewala further said that the Supreme Court has agreed to its objection on July 13.
“July 13: SC puts a stamp on our reservation”, he said.
In a detailed note, published on June 1, Mr Singhvi alleged that the Modi government is using tax payers money to snoop their private life by setting up a social media communication hub and that the Union government embodies the ‘Big Brother Syndrome”.
When taking up the petition on Friday, filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Mahua Moitra, the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said that “the government wanted to tap citizen’s WhatsApp messages and it will be like creating a surveillance state”.
In his petition, Mr Moitra said that the government was trying to monitor the individuals by tracking their accounts in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and e-mails.
The apex court has sought the Union Government’s response within two weeks and will take up the matter again on August 3.
