Cong asserts Bharat bandh a success, trashes govt arguments in justification of surging fuel prices

New Delhi, Sep 10 (UNI) The Congress on Monday claimed that the Bharat bandh, called by it in protest against the sharp hike in prices of petroleum products, has been a huge success while trashing the arguments by the BJP that global factors were responsible for the increase in prices of petrol and diesel.
The Congress said that the overwhelming response to the bandh showed that the people were fed up of the NDA Govenment and were ready too vote it out in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing a joint press conference, AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot and AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said that the Bharat bandh had evoked an overwhelming response from people across the country and that the protest had recieved the support from 21 political parties.
They also described as an 'untruth' the arguments put forward by the Government that global factors are responsible for the sharp hike in prices of these products.
'Today's bharat bandh was a huge success with Congress workers across the country and several opposition parties holding protests across the country to demand a reduction in excise duties levied on petrol and diesel and bringing these products under the GST. Leaders of 21 political parties took a resolve to fight against the economic policies of the NDA Government. Leaders of many opposition parties participated in a joint opposition dharna at the Ramlila maidan.
Reports coming from across the country show that people of the country have taught a lesson to the government by observing a bandh, which has received an ovewhelming support from the people. It has taken the form of a mass movement,'AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot told reporters here.
Mr Surjewala trashed the arguments put forward by the government that global factors are responsible for the huge hike in prices of petroleum products.
'The Government fielded two of its ministers- Dharmendra Pradhan and Ravi Shankar Prasad. They expressed the inability of the government to check fuel price hike saying that Global factors were responsible for it. Their arguments are nothing but a litany of lies.
The real reason for the indiscriminate hike in the prices of petroleum products is the plethora of excise duties and customs duties levied by the government in the last four years. The Govenrmet has imposed a Rs 11 lakh crore 'tax loot' on the people of the country by way of excise duties on petrol and diesel. We challenge the government to roll back the 212 per cent hike in excise duties on petrol and 443 per cent excise duties on diesel,'Mr Surjewala said,
He said that the Government was selling diesel and petrol to several countries at Rs 34 per litre and Rs 37 per litre respectively, which meant that the Government was fleecing the people of the country.
Mr Surjewala warned that the 'mass movement' by the Congress against the hike in petrol and diesel prices would continue till the hike in excise duties was rolled back and till the petrol and diesel were brought under the GST.
'The 'mass movement' by the Congress against the hike in petrol and diesel prices will continue till the petrol and diesel were brought under the GST,'he said.
He said that the overwhelming response to the bharat bandh across the country showed that the people of the country were fed up of the Narendra Modi government and were waiting to vote it out of power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
'The overwhelming response to the bharat bandh shows that the people of the country are ready to give a send off to the BJP Governemt at the Centre ,'he said.
