Conflict of Interest: Mary recuses herself from sports award panel

New Delhi, Aug 17 (UNI) Six-time World Champion Mary Kom on Saturday recused herself from the Dronacharya Award selection panel meeting due to conflict of interest following sharp criticism as her own coach Chhotelal Yadav's name came up for the award.
Other than Mary others who are in the panel are former football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, ex-women’s cricket team captain Anjum Chopra, former long-jumper Anju Bobby George and table tennis coach Kamlesh Mehta.
Besides Chhotelal, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has recommended the names of World Championships bronze-medallist Gaurav Bidhuri and Asian Games gold medallist Amit Panghal for the Arjuna Award while Sandhya Gurung and Shiv Singh are the other coaches they have nominated for the Dronacharya.
Unlike previous editions, this committee will handpick all the winners of National Sports Awards -- the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award (for coaches), Dhyan Chand Award (lifetime achievement) and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award.
