Colourful "Bonalu" festival a low key affair due to COVID-19 pandemic

Hyderabad, Jul 12 (UNI) For the first time in the history of the more than 100-year-old Ujjaini Mahankali temple in Secunderabad, the annual Bonalu festival, one of the most colorful and hugely attended religious event began on a low key on Sunday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The offering of the first "Bonum" (rice cooked with jaggery) was presented to the presiding deity at the famous temple devoid of the usual multitudes of devotees. The traditional poojas were also conducted by priests in the absence of devotees.
Usually, the streets of the city used to be packed with colourfully-dressed women carrying decorated brass pots containing the Bonam on their head towards the temple but this year the celebrations were confined to their homes due to the pandemic.
Authorities also urged the devotees to celebrate the festival at their homes and all wine shops in north and central police zones were ordered to be shut till Monday in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
Today's Bonalu festival heralds similar festival in different parts of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and their neighbourhood during the next one week.
